Questions and Answers

Q: Does All About Irrigation install systems?

A: No, we only maintain, repair, and modify existing systems. The most installation that we’ll do is adding a zone to a system. This allows us the best possible response times for repairs. We can refer a couple of competent installers if you’d like, and we recommend 3 competing quotes.

Q: What does one need to do to winterize their sprinkler system?

A: In states north of SC, sprinkler systems are “winterized” by air compressors that blow out all the water in the pipes and heads. This is necessary there because of the frostline, or the depth to which the ground freezes. In NY, for instance, the frostline is 30”-40”, but in SC it’s only 3”-8”. It does get below freezing for a few days at a time in the upstate, and we do see a small amount of freeze damage every year. We recommend a “shut down,” which is shutting off the water supply to the irrigation system at the meter or backflow preventer, partially draining the mainline to the extent that it’s possible, turning off the timer, and opening any hose bibbs. This doesn’t guarantee against all types of freeze damage, but it will prevent 98% of it. More importantly, it will prevent emergency situations which always seem to occur in the middle of the night or on a holiday. Pumps should always be drained, if not fully disconnected.

Q: Can I get a quote for repairs?

A: Unfortunately, it’s not possible to give quotes for repair work at our price level. We do give estimates as part of a paid service call, based on decades of experience, but never quotes. Large plumbing and electrical service companies have adopted a guaranteed pricing model with “free quotes” that people have come to expect from all service companies. The difference is, those larger companies base their price book on $120-$200 per hour. When they guarantee a price, they’re overcharging some so that they can undercharge others. Our motto is, “Expert service at a fair price.” We charge on an hourly basis, so if a repair goes quickly, that’s all we’re going to charge you for. Sometimes a repair is more problematic and time consuming because of roots, rocks, illogical pipe configurations, etc. We’ll do our best to communicate and keep the homeowner in the loop. The last thing in the world that we want to do is surprise someone with charges that weren’t expected or haven’t been discussed.

Q: Why isn’t there an email address posted?

A: We spend most of our day in the field and sometimes don’t see a computer screen until after 9pm. Please call for the best response.
